The 326 hp Vortec 5.3L V8 engine that is specified in so many Silverado 1500 models incorporates a series of fuel-saving features. Active Fuel Management shuts down half the engine's cylinders when power demands are low. And Variable Valve Timing (VVT) optimizes combustion timing to boost low-end torque while increasing fuel efficiency. The XFE model takes these gains and includes a six-speed automatic transmission with two overdrive gears — in addition to a 3.08:1 axle ratio and lower rolling resistance tires. The result is best-in-class highway and city fuel consumption ratings.**
A DIFERENT MODE ALTOGETHER.
It's the truck that changed the game forever: Silverado Hybrid. It features one of the world's most sophisticated technologies: the Two-Mode Hybrid System. The two modes enable the truck to run on a combination of Vortec 6.0L LIVC V8 VVT gasoline power and electric power generated by GM's Hybrid Propulsion System — or each on its own. The foundation of Silverado's incredible strength begins with its three-piece modular frame. It provides the greatest reinforcement where it is needed most. An example is provided by the hydroformed, fully-boxed front section that is used to support the weight of the powertrain. The frame also employs high-strength steel to support the box, facilitating payloads up to 898 kg (1980 lb.).
